What Are Skin Infections?
Skin problems can be frustrating, especially when you're unsure of the cause or the right treatment. At UMG Urgent Care in Columbia, MD, we offer quality care for skin infections, burns, and rashes so you can get back to feeling good again. Our experienced medical team is here to help you with effective treatments that bring fast relief. A skin infection is a condition in which harmful germs, like bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, get into your skin and cause illness. Skin infections can range from mild irritations to serious conditions. Sometimes, they cause just a small rash or burn marks on the skin while other times, they can spread and become dangerous if left untreated. The causes of skin infections are varied, but exposure to harmful germs that may go through a break in the skin is the most common pathway. Poor hygiene, a weakened immune system, and underlying health conditions can also increase the risk of developing an infection.
How Are Skin Infections Treated?
The appropriate treatment for skin infections depends on the type and severity of the infection. At UMG Urgent Care, our medical team will examine your skin, determine the cause, and provide the best treatment options, which can range from over-the-counter medications to prescription antibiotics or antifungal ointments. Treating burned skin and rashes requires a unique approach, depending on the cause and severity of the issue. Rashes caused by allergic reactions benefit from antihistamines and steroid creams to reduce itching and inflammation. Burns may be classified as first-degree, second-degree, or third-degree based on their severity to the skin. Treatments may include antibiotic creams, bandaging, and more advanced care. It's crucial to seek professional care to ensure proper healing.
What Types of Skin Infections Benefit from Proper Care?
UMG Urgent Care practitioners can help treat various types of skin infections with different approaches that offer specific benefits. The types of skin infections treated at our clinic and the advantages of receiving proper care include:
- Bacterial skin infections: Common infections like cellulitis, impetigo, and boils often begin when bacteria enter the skin through a cut, scratch, or even a burn. Antibiotic treatment prevents the infection from spreading, reduces inflammation, and speeds up healing.
- Viral infections: Caused by different types of viruses that make their way into the skin, viral infections, including warts and cold sores, are highly contagious. Antiviral treatments help control outbreaks, reducing pain and minimizing the risk of spreading the virus to others.
- Fungal infections: This type usually affects moist areas, such as a skin rash on the legs, and causes conditions like athlete's foot or ringworm. Antifungal medications clear up the infection, prevent recurrence, and alleviate itching and discomfort.
- Parasitic infections: These infections involve organisms, like mites or lice, that live on or inside the skin. They lead to persistent itching and irritation. Specialized treatments remove parasites, stop itching, and restore comfort to the affected skin.
UMG Urgent Care Reviews
Omg we had the best experience at UMG Urgent Care! Stephanie and her team got us in ASAP, and I was honestly impressed with HOW nice and clean it was. I loved how inviting the space was, clearly all brand new and updated, it just felt so refreshing! The check in and wait time was super fast & easy, and we were seen right away! And I was able to call back with any questions I had.
I've used UMG Urgent Care twice now - once for a Sports/School Physical for my children and once for a pre-op clearance visit. The entire process was so smooth and seamless.I was seen on time and I was able to get an appointment fairly quickly. The staff was always welcoming and pleasant - something that is super rare for an Urgent Care or medical office in general.Stephanie is absolutely amazing. She is knowledgeable, efficient and has great bedside manner.I'll be using UMG for all our primary care needs moving forward. I'd highly recommend skipping the ER or the big chains like Patient First unless you want to wait hours to be treated inhumanely.I wish all medical offices could be this organized and professional!
We had an excellent experience at this Urgent Care - the front desk person and the doctor we saw were both so kind and accommodating, and took the time to explain important information. We were able to get a last minute appointment, and once we arrived, we were taken back quickly. Our entire experience was 30 minutes, in and out. It was wonderful and we will absolutely be back!!
Excellent customer service and care! Patient, understanding and clear communicator! Thank you Stephanie!
My telehealth visit went great! The process of setting up an appointment was simple, and I easily found a day and time that worked for me. The provider was very attentive to my symptoms and made sure my medication was promptly sent to the pharmacy. I really appreciated how responsive and efficient the whole experience was.
