Skin Infections in Columbia, MD

Skin problems can be frustrating, especially when you're unsure of the cause or the right treatment. At UMG Urgent Care in Columbia, MD, we offer quality care for skin infections, burns, and rashes so you can get back to feeling good again. Our experienced medical team is here to help you with effective treatments that bring fast relief. A skin infection is a condition in which harmful germs, like bacteria, viruses, fungi, or parasites, get into your skin and cause illness. Skin infections can range from mild irritations to serious conditions. Sometimes, they cause just a small rash or burn marks on the skin while other times, they can spread and become dangerous if left untreated. The causes of skin infections are varied, but exposure to harmful germs that may go through a break in the skin is the most common pathway. Poor hygiene, a weakened immune system, and underlying health conditions can also increase the risk of developing an infection.

How Are Skin Infections Treated?

The appropriate treatment for skin infections depends on the type and severity of the infection. At UMG Urgent Care, our medical team will examine your skin, determine the cause, and provide the best treatment options, which can range from over-the-counter medications to prescription antibiotics or antifungal ointments. Treating burned skin and rashes requires a unique approach, depending on the cause and severity of the issue. Rashes caused by allergic reactions benefit from antihistamines and steroid creams to reduce itching and inflammation. Burns may be classified as first-degree, second-degree, or third-degree based on their severity to the skin. Treatments may include antibiotic creams, bandaging, and more advanced care. It's crucial to seek professional care to ensure proper healing.

UMG Urgent Care practitioners can help treat various types of skin infections with different approaches that offer specific benefits. The types of skin infections treated at our clinic and the advantages of receiving proper care include:

  • Bacterial skin infections: Common infections like cellulitis, impetigo, and boils often begin when bacteria enter the skin through a cut, scratch, or even a burn. Antibiotic treatment prevents the infection from spreading, reduces inflammation, and speeds up healing.
  • Viral infections: Caused by different types of viruses that make their way into the skin, viral infections, including warts and cold sores, are highly contagious. Antiviral treatments help control outbreaks, reducing pain and minimizing the risk of spreading the virus to others.
  • Fungal infections: This type usually affects moist areas, such as a skin rash on the legs, and causes conditions like athlete's foot or ringworm. Antifungal medications clear up the infection, prevent recurrence, and alleviate itching and discomfort.
  • Parasitic infections: These infections involve organisms, like mites or lice, that live on or inside the skin. They lead to persistent itching and irritation. Specialized treatments remove parasites, stop itching, and restore comfort to the affected skin.

Visit date: September 4, 2025Office: Clean and quiet. It’s not overstimulating with tv noise or loud patients. Although, I was the only patient in the waiting area.Wait time: I was greeted and immediately attended to. I filled out the standard urgent care forms (online) asking for medical history and insurance information. It took me a little while to complete due to my symptoms and it was a little lengthy. I didn’t keep track of the exact minutes but I was seen immediately after completing the forms.Vitals: The medical assistant that took my vitals was thorough and friendly. Most MA’s skip height and weight and just ask; however this MA checked both.Provider: After the MA’s did a preliminary evaluation, the provider came in. There was barely any wait. She looked my test results, asked me questions and did her own thorough assessment of my current symptoms. She put me at ease, assuring me that my condition wasn’t as bad as initially presumed. I was grateful. Her bedside manners were exceptional. Rare in this field. You can tell she was genuine and truly compassionate about my health. She advised me to go home immediately and to contact her office if I had any concerns about my symptoms.Overall: I am very satisfied and grateful for this staff’s help. This office is about 15-20 minutes from my home but worth the travel all non-emergency medical care. Thank you Nurse Stephanie, APRN.

What a pleasant surprise! I had to bring my daughter in after the first day of school. We both anticipated a long wait and crowded waiting room. Instead, we were greeted in a modern, new lobby with just one other person. After completing required paperwork, we were taken back quickly to an examination room. The doctor was amazing with my daughter and provided great care with a lovely bedside manner. Overall great customer experience!
