Foreign object removal refers to the medical procedure of extracting objects that have inadvertently entered the body and become lodged, particularly in areas like the ear, nose, or throat. These incidents can occur across almost all age groups, often necessitating prompt attention to prevent complications. At UMG Urgent Care in Columbia, MD, our team is adept at providing comprehensive ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care, ensuring such foreign bodies are safely and efficiently removed.

What causes foreign objects to get stuck in the ear, nose, or throat?

Children are naturally curious and may insert small items like beads, buttons, or food particles into their ears or nostrils. Adults, on the other hand, might experience foreign object incidents due to accidents, such as swallowing bones or other items that become lodged in the throat. Common scenarios include:

  • Inserting objects into the ear or nose out of curiosity or habit
  • Accidentally swallowing foreign items
  • Insects entering the ear canal during sleep or outdoor activities

Recognizing these situations promptly is crucial for seeking appropriate ENT treatment and preventing further complications.

What symptoms indicate a foreign object's presence?

The symptoms can vary based on the object's location and size but often include:

  • Ear: Pain, decreased hearing, a feeling of fullness, or a visible object in the ear canal.
  • Nose: Difficulty breathing through the affected nostril, nasal discharge (sometimes foul-smelling), or nosebleeds.
  • Throat: Pain, difficulty swallowing, drooling, or a sensation of something being stuck.

If you or someone you know exhibits these symptoms, it's essential to consult healthcare professionals experienced in comprehensive ENT care to address the issue promptly.

How are foreign objects professionally removed?

The removal technique depends on the object's location and nature. At UMG Urgent Care in Columbia, MD, our skilled team may utilize:

  • Visualization tools: Devices like otoscopes aid in examining the ear canal and eardrum to locate and assess the foreign body.
  • Specialized instruments: Tools such as forceps, suction devices, or magnets are employed to grasp and extract the object safely.
  • Irrigation: Flushing the area with sterile water to dislodge and remove the foreign body.

Minor surgical procedures might be necessary in some instances, especially when the object is deeply embedded or poses a risk during removal. It's imperative to avoid attempting removal at home, as improper techniques can push the object deeper or cause injury.

What are the potential complications of delayed foreign object removal?

Leaving a foreign object untreated can lead to:

  • Infections: Bacterial growth around the object can cause infections, leading to swelling, pain, and discharge.
  • Tissue damage: Prolonged presence can erode or puncture surrounding tissues, resulting in bleeding or more severe injuries.
  • Airway obstruction: Objects in the throat can block air passages, posing serious respiratory risks.

Timely intervention by ENT health professionals is vital to mitigate these risks and ensure optimal recovery.

Visit date: September 4, 2025Office: Clean and quiet. It’s not overstimulating with tv noise or loud patients. Although, I was the only patient in the waiting area.Wait time: I was greeted and immediately attended to. I filled out the standard urgent care forms (online) asking for medical history and insurance information. It took me a little while to complete due to my symptoms and it was a little lengthy. I didn’t keep track of the exact minutes but I was seen immediately after completing the forms.Vitals: The medical assistant that took my vitals was thorough and friendly. Most MA’s skip height and weight and just ask; however this MA checked both.Provider: After the MA’s did a preliminary evaluation, the provider came in. There was barely any wait. She looked my test results, asked me questions and did her own thorough assessment of my current symptoms. She put me at ease, assuring me that my condition wasn’t as bad as initially presumed. I was grateful. Her bedside manners were exceptional. Rare in this field. You can tell she was genuine and truly compassionate about my health. She advised me to go home immediately and to contact her office if I had any concerns about my symptoms.Overall: I am very satisfied and grateful for this staff’s help. This office is about 15-20 minutes from my home but worth the travel all non-emergency medical care. Thank you Nurse Stephanie, APRN.

What a pleasant surprise! I had to bring my daughter in after the first day of school. We both anticipated a long wait and crowded waiting room. Instead, we were greeted in a modern, new lobby with just one other person. After completing required paperwork, we were taken back quickly to an examination room. The doctor was amazing with my daughter and provided great care with a lovely bedside manner. Overall great customer experience!
